Summary
  • The International Sculpture Park is closely located to the Sengcho Royal Tombs from the prehistoric period and the Uhwae Sanseong (mountain fortress). It is a unique cultural and arts park that includes the recently discovered 77 royal tombs from Gaya Era and over 20 contemporary art sculptures by Korean and international artists and harmoniously expresses the artifacts from prehistoric era and the sculpture arts of today.
The sculpture artworks on display at the park were created by worldly renowned artists who have participated in the Sancheong International Contemporary Art Sculpture Symposium held in 1999, 2003 and 2005.
The Uhwae Sanseong is built on the mountains (366.9 meters above sea level) on the upper left of the Sengcho Royal Tombs and it is Taemwe type Seokchook Sanseong style built during the early Goryeo Dynasty. It is said that during the Japanese invasion, General Jaewoo Kwak of Hongeui lead an army and made significant military accomplishment in blocking off the Japanese invaders at this place.
On the hills of about 200~240 meters above sea level of the Taebongsan on the back of the park are the Sengcho Royal Tombs, which are collectively designated as the Gyeongsangnam-do Commemorative Artifact No. 7. Inside the tomb, stones are piled to form a room and the ceilings are narrowed to cover the tope with a stone. It is a front-opened type stone grave with entrance and a passage. It is estimated that there were over 100 graves at one time and it is evaluated to be an important architectural remains for studying the royal tombs of Gaya Era.
The Sengcho International Sculpture Park is situated at an ideal location for viewing the Sengcho-myeon town, Goeuptteul, and Gyeongho River. Near by the park, there are many well know restaurants specializing in regional dishes of freshwater fish, such as Piri-jjim, Ssogari-tang, and Uh-tang Goksu, and is therefore, a great place to taste the local dishes of Sancheong.
