- Summary
-
- Together with Geumgangsan and Hallasan, Jirisan is known as one of the Samshinsan (Three Legendary Mountains). Of the 5 major mountains designated during the Shilla Dynasty, it is the Southern Mountain and the legend has it that ‘if a foolish person goes to the mountain, he will be
changed to a wise (jihae in Korean) man and therefore, it was called the Jirisan.
Jirisan was also called the Doryusan, signifying that the ranges of Baekdusan flowed through the Korean peninsula and came all the way down south. It was also called the Bingjangsan derived from the depth of the enlightening by the high Buddhism monk.
The Jirisan National Park was designated as Korea’s first national park on December 29, 1967. It runs through 3 do’s (provinces) of Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do; 5 si’s (cities) or guns (counties) of Hadong-gun, Sancheong-gun, Hamyang-gun, Gurae-gun, and Namwon-si; and 15 eups and myeons with a total area of 440.517㎢. When this area is transformed into Korean pyeong (1 pyeong = approximately 3.3m²), it amounts to an area over 100 million 3 thousand pyeong.
This is 7 times the size of the Gyeryongsan National Park and about 52 times the size of Yeouido. In terms of land area, it is the largest among the 20 national parks in Korea.
Jirisan has more than 10 high peaks including the Chunwang Peak (1,915.4m), which is the second largest peak in South Korea, as well as the Jaeseok Peak (1,806m), Banya Peak (1,732m), and Nogodan (1,507m). The main range from Chunwang Peak to Nogodan runs 25.5㎞, which is over 60 ri (1 ri = approximately 400 meters), and the circumference of the mountain is over 320㎞, or over 800 ri.
In addition to the Chilseon Stream, which runs with the clear water originating from Chunwang Peak, there are numerous streams including the Bemsagol Stream and Daewonsa Stream. Together with the magnificent waterfalls of Boolil, Gooryong, and Yongchoo, the mountain showcases breathtaking natural sceneries. Furthermore, many Buddhism temples including the major temples of Hwaeomsa, Ssanggyesa, Yeongoksa, Daewonsa, and Silsangsa, as well as diverse cultural assets signify that this is the major center of Korea’s Buddhism.
Jirisan is also the mountain of life that provides place of home for countless plants, animals, and even people.
Among the 15 ranges, which runs south to north from the main range off of Chunwang Peak to Nogodan in a form as if holding two arms wide open, and the valleys is the habitat for 245 types of woody plants, 579 types of herbaceous plants, 41 types of mammals belonging to 15 different class, 165 types of birds belonging to 39 different class, and 215 types of insects.
The water that originated from Jirisan forms the Deokcheon, Eumcheon, and the Hwangcheon rivers and there are over 20 peaks and 15 hills that soar over 1,000 meters above sea level.
In addition, there are over 50 of each of springs that flow throughout the mountain, named viewpoints and boulders and its mysteries and legends are portrayed in many tales including the Mayago and the Banya Dosa as well as the Hoya and Yeonjin.
Even if we overlook the records that there were over 350 small and large temples in Jirisan at one time, as well as the 7 National Treasures and the 26 Treasures, and the data on the regional cultural assets, major historical sites, and folk information, the Jirisan is itself a magnificent mountain and it doesn’t require any embellishments.
